The opening reception of Muskegon Museum of Art’s 82nd Regional Exhibition was held Thursday, May 27th. This art competition has been around since 1928 and is not easy to get in to. Museum Executive Director, Judith Hayner reminded all do the 117 artists, their friends, family, museum patrons and the press, that it should be considered an honor to have their work selected for the Regional Exhibit.
622 works were submitted this year for the competition, of these 145 works by 117 West and Mid-Michigan artists were selected for the exhibition. The Juror this year was Jim Nawara a painter and print maker who is currently an Art Professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
Best of Show was a gender bending oil painting by Molly Marie Nuzzo, of Muskegon, called “Cristy”. There were a number of purchase awards, including one for a wood and glass lamp, to furniture designer and Kendall graduate, Brent Daniells of Muskegon, whose works some of you may have seen when they were displayed at the former BrassWind Gallery in Fremont. A purchase award was also given to Steve Replogle a Fremont Artist for his pen and ink drawing entitled “Little Gray Sky”. Purchase awards allow collectors to select and purchase art from the show prior to the opening reception.
Steve Replogle has lived in Fremont for fifteen years. Two of Steve’s favored art mediums are wax and pen and ink. He makes very creative candle figures with a medieval theme. For the last several years he has made a commitment to draw something from nature everyday. He first used the landscapes around his home and now after having completed so many drawings he has been able to create stylized versions with simplified lines. He has been influenced by the landscape drawings of the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) Rembrandt as most people refer to him and to his work. Steve finds that the Newaygo County country side offers landscapes very similar to the scenes Rembrandt would have drawn or painted in his native Country of Holland. You may see some other Replogle art at the Newaygo County Arts Place in Fremont.
The bronze sculpture Mercy by Fremont High School Alumni, and award winning artist Ron Head is also in the Regional Exhibition. Mercy is a sculpture of a woman touching the heart of another with compassion. Ron started throwing clay on the table and this little figure started to emerge. Then he began to see it as the sculpture. He feels that his better works do not start with an idea in mind. He puts on the clay until something is suggested then the sculpture itself starts to tell a story. Mercy tells the story of how we can embrace our more angelic side. The sculpture has a soft taupe colored patina like more traditional Italian Sculpture.
Ron has been focusing on spending more time in West Michigan and is in discussions with Fremont Mayor Jim Rynberg about a future life size sculpture commission for the City. He has also loaned one of his other bronze sculptures of a firefighter and his guardian angel, called Courage and Faith, to the Fremont Fire Department and it is on display in the Fremont City offices.
Every Thursday Meijers sponsors free admission at the Muskegon Museum of Art located at 296 Webster Avenue providing a great opportunity for a day of exploring the arts in West Michigan. There will be a Gallery Walk where you can meet and greet some of the artists from the exhibit on June 24th. For more information visit their website at www.muskegonartmuseum.org
